Woman at the Well

John 4 says Jesus "had to" pass through Samaria. But He did not have to. So why did He go?

No Jewish traveler had to go through Samaria. There was a route around it. Everyone took it. When John says Jesus had to go, he is not describing geography. He is describing purpose.

Question 1 of 4
💧 Biblical Context
Why did Jewish travelers in Jesus's time avoid going through Samaria?
The hatred between Jews and Samaritans goes back centuries -- and it changes everything about this story.
Correct!
Jews and Samaritans had despised each other for centuries. The Samaritans were considered half-breeds who had corrupted the faith. Contact with them was seen as spiritually defiling. There was a longer route around Samaria that Jewish travelers took specifically to avoid it. Nobody went through Samaria if they were Jewish. When Jesus went through Samaria, He was not taking the convenient route. He was making a deliberate choice.
Not quite -- here is the real reason:

Question 2 of 4
💧 Biblical Context
The woman came to the well at noon -- the hottest part of the day. Why is that significant?
Women in that culture drew water in the morning, together. Noon was when you came alone.
Correct!
Women drew water in the morning, in groups. Coming at noon meant coming alone. She had five husbands and was living with a man she was not married to. She was not just an outcast to the Jews. She was an outcast in her own Samaritan community. She came when no one else was there. And Jesus was already at the well when she arrived. He had planned the entire route around being there at that moment for her.
Not quite -- here is what noon actually meant:

What happened when a Bible study group finally understood this.

A pastor had been teaching John 4 for years. One night, he told his group what noon actually meant. That she came alone. That Jesus had already sent everyone else away. That He had built His entire route around being at that well at that moment for her.

A woman in the corner of the room went very still.

"I have a past. And I have spent a lot of time in church feeling like the woman who needs to slip in and slip out before anyone gets a good look at me. And I just now understood that Jesus did not find this woman by accident. He went out of His way. He got there early. He sent everyone else away. He built His route around getting to her."

She stopped. "That means something to me that I cannot fully put into words."

At the end of the night, a man who had been a Christian for forty years said quietly:

"I have read this story dozens of times. I never understood that Jesus went through Samaria. He did not pass through. He went through. For her."

Context changes everything. Every single time.
