Question 1 of 4
🔥 Biblical Context
The Hebrew word for the burning bush is "seneh." What kind of plant was it?
Most people picture something very different from the reality.
Correct!
The Hebrew word seneh refers to a specific type of desert shrub found only in the Sinai peninsula. It is a low, tangled, thorny bramble. Not an impressive tree. A weed that chokes the life out of the ground around it. God did not appear in a majestic cedar. He appeared in the most overlooked, insignificant plant in the desert.
Not quite -- here is what it actually was:

Question 2 of 4
🔥 Biblical Context
Moses was eighty years old when he saw the burning bush. What had he spent the previous forty years doing?
The timing of this moment changes everything about what God was communicating.
Correct!
Moses spent forty years as a prince in Egypt and forty years as a shepherd in the desert. He had failed. He had fled. He had given up on any idea that he was the one God had chosen. He was eighty years old, tending someone else's flock, in the middle of nowhere. And that is exactly when God appeared. Not in Moses's moment of strength. In his moment of total obscurity.

What happened when a Bible study group finally understood this.

A pastor had been teaching Exodus for years. One night, he told his group what the word seneh actually meant.

He watched a man in the back of the room go completely still.

"God did not appear in a cedar tree. He appeared in a weed. He appeared to a man who had been hiding in the desert for forty years. That is the whole point and I have been reading right past it my entire life."

A woman said, "I always thought the burning bush was about the miracle of the fire. But the miracle is that God chose that bush. That man. That moment. After forty years of failure."

At the end of the night, a man who had been a Christian for thirty-five years said quietly:

"I have spent years feeling like God passed me by. Like my moment came and went. I just now understood that Moses was eighty years old when God showed up."

Context changes everything. Every single time.
