10 Billion Years In Hell And Not One Second Closer To A Drop Of Water. This Pastor's Warning Will Change How You Read Your Bible Forever

This pastor spent 18 years teaching Scripture before he realized his entire congregation was reading the Bible without truly knowing the God who wrote it. Here is what he did about it.

I want you to think about something for a moment.

Not about your job. Not about your plans this weekend. Not about anything you have going on right now.

I want you to think about eternity.

You will spend 10 billion years in hell and not be one second closer to being done. 10 trillion years and you won't be one second closer to a drop of water. Hell is not a season. Hell is not a chapter. Hell is forever. And if you get there and lift up your eyes and realize you never truly knew Him, not just knew about Him, truly knew Him, it will be too late.

That thought kept me up one night about three years ago.

I've been teaching Scripture for 18 years. I've sat with thousands of believers. I've preached to full congregations, led Bible studies, counseled people through their darkest moments with God's Word.

And one night I asked myself a question I had never asked before.

Do the people I'm teaching actually know Him?

Or do they just know about Him?

The next Wednesday I tested it.

We were studying Romans. Paul's letter about salvation by faith, the very thing that separates eternity with God from eternity without Him. I asked my group if they knew why Paul wrote Romans. Who he was writing to. What was happening in Rome at the time.

Everyone nodded.

Then I asked them to explain it.

Silence.

They looked at each other. Looked at their Bibles. Looked at their notes.

Nothing.

And in that moment I did not just see a group of people who did not understand Romans.

I saw people who loved God with everything they had and still could not truly know Him through His own Word.

And I thought about eternity.

About standing before God one day.

About what it would mean to have carried His Word your entire life without ever truly grasping what He was saying to you.

They had been coming to Bible study for months. Some for years. They showed up every week. They participated. They took notes. They highlighted their Bibles.

But they didn't understand what they were reading.

They understood my explanations. But not the Scripture itself. And the moment I wasn't there to explain it, they were completely lost.

I'm a pastor. I've been teaching Scripture for 18 years.

And I had been failing them the entire time.

The Night I Realized I Had Been Giving Them Fish Instead of Teaching Them to Fish

That night after everyone left I sat in the empty room thinking about eternity. About every one of those faces. About what it would mean for them to stand before God one day having spent their whole lives reading the Bible without ever truly understanding what He was saying to them.

10 billion years. Not one second closer to being done.

I couldn't sleep.

My wife found me there at 11 PM still sitting in the dark.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"I don't think anyone in my Bible study actually understands what we're studying."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean they understand when I explain it. But they can't understand it on their own. The moment I'm not there to walk them through it, they're guessing."

"Isn't that normal? Honey, you've studied for years. They have jobs, families."

"That's the problem. I keep expecting them to study like I do. But they can't. They don't have time."

She sat down next to me.

"So what are you going to do?"

"I don't know."

But I did know.

Worse, I knew exactly what I had to do.

I just didn't want to admit how much work it would be.

That night sitting alone in that dark room I kept coming back to the same thought.

10 billion years. Not one second closer to being done.

These people were not going to hell. Their faith was real. Their love for God was genuine.

But there is a difference between a faith built on truly knowing Him and a faith built on nodding along.

And I had been feeding them nodding along faith for 18 years.

I could not live with that anymore.

Why Most Christians Will Stand Before God One Day Having Never Truly Understood His Word

Before I tell you what I did that night, I need you to understand something important.

If you have spent years reading your Bible and still walk away feeling lost, like you are missing something, like you are circling the truth but never quite touching it, that is not your fault.

It is not a sign of weak faith. It is not a sign that you don't love God enough.

The problem is not you.

The Bible is not one book. It is 66 books written by more than 40 different authors over more than a thousand years. Each one was written at a specific time, to specific people, for a specific reason.

When you read Romans without knowing that Paul was writing to a church divided between Jews and Gentiles, you miss the love and urgency behind every single word.

When you read the Psalms without knowing what David was going through in his darkest seasons, the words stay flat on the page instead of reaching into your soul.

When you read Revelation without knowing John was exiled on a prison island writing to Christians being actively persecuted and killed, the whole book feels terrifying instead of hopeful.

Context changes everything.

And most believers have simply never been given that context in a way that is clear, simple, and actually usable on their own.

That is the gap.

And that night sitting alone in that dark room thinking about eternity, thinking about 10 billion years and not one second closer to being done, I decided I was going to close it.

What I Did Next — And the Three Months That Changed Everything

The next morning I opened my computer and started writing.

Genesis.

I wrote down everything someone needs to know before reading Genesis. Who wrote it. When. Why. What was happening in the world. The main themes. How it fits into the bigger story God has been telling since the beginning.

Not a sermon. Not a devotional. Just the context.

I broke it down until my teenage daughter could read it and understand it completely on her own.

Then I did Exodus. Then Leviticus. Then Numbers.

Every single book of the Bible.

Sixty-six pages. One page per book.

It took me three months.

Three months of sitting at my desk after everyone went to bed. Three months of writing and rewriting. Three months of putting 18 years of studying into a format that any believer could pick up and use completely on their own.

No pastor required.

What Happened the Next Wednesday Made Me Realize How Many Souls Were At Stake

I brought those 66 pages to Bible study and put a copy at every seat without saying a word about what it was.

"Before we open our Bibles tonight," I said, "I want you to read the page on Romans. Just read it. Then we'll study."

I watched them read.

Some finished in two minutes. Some took five.

Then I said, "Okay. Now open your Bibles to Romans chapter 1."

And I watched something I had never seen before in 18 years of ministry.

Their eyes changed.

Not confusion. Not blank staring.

Understanding.

Pure understanding.

One woman looked up at me practically with tears in her eyes.

"I've been reading Romans for years and I never understood what was actually happening. But now it makes sense. All of it makes sense."

Another guy said, "Why did nobody ever tell me Paul was writing to a church divided between Jews and Gentiles? That changes everything he is saying about faith and grace."

The rest of the study was completely different from anything I had experienced before.

They were not waiting for me to explain anything. They were discovering it themselves.

Asking questions I had never heard them ask.

Connecting things across different books.

Actually understanding Scripture for the first time.

At the end of the night one of the older men came up to me.

He had been in my Bible study for six years.

"Pastor, I have been a Christian for 40 years. And this is the first time I have ever studied the Bible and felt like I actually understood what was happening. Thank you."

I went home that night and told my wife.

"They got it. For the first time, they actually got it."

That night driving home I thought about eternity again.

But differently this time.

Not with dread. With relief.

Because for the first time in 18 years I felt like I had actually done my job.

Not just explained Scripture.

Given them the tools to truly know the God who wrote it.

That was more than eight months ago.

Since then hundreds of people have told me the same thing.

"This is the first time I have ever understood what I was reading."

Not because I am some brilliant teacher. But because I finally gave them what they actually needed.

Context. Who wrote each book. When. Why. What was happening. The main themes.

Romans. Paul's message about salvation by faith. The only thing standing between any of us and that eternity.

John. Written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

James. What it actually means to follow Him. Not just say you do.

• God does not just want you to read His Word.

• He wants you to know Him through it.

• And on the other side of this life, when you stand before Him, the question will not be how many chapters you read or how many verses you highlighted.

• It will be whether you truly knew Him.

• Not knew about Him.

• Knew Him.
